Nothing brings a smile to my face like a day spent hitting the links under sunny skies. Whether you’re looking to learn the sport of golf or planning an all-day outing with friends or colleagues, the county has several premier public and private golf courses to choose from.
If you want to continue your day outdoors, head over to John J. Radcliffe Appomattox River Conservation Area or Pocahontas State Park. The conservation area consists of 171 acres of woodlands and swampland along the Appomattox River, which serves as a habitat for birds such as blue herons and woodpeckers and other wildlife. Walk or run the trail and stop on the handful of elevated boardwalks that extend out into marsh overlooks to enjoy the abundant wildlife. You may even see an otter or raccoon. Located just below the Brasfield Dam and Appomattox River Water Authority, the Appomattox River Canoe Launch provides a parking area and boat slide for small non-powered craft as well. Pocahontas State Park offers boating, fishing, and picnicking, as well as tent and cabin camping. The park’s 90-plus miles of trails make it popular for bicyclists and runners, and its aquatic center has a several pools with water slides. From May through September, the park’s 2,000-seat amphitheater hosts the Pocahontas Premieres series of concerts and family-friendly entertainment.
