A Day in the District highlights each County Supervisor’s favorite spots, hidden gems and the facts and anecdotes that make their district special. Representing Dale is District Supervisor, James Holland.
With the county gearing up to celebrate our 275th anniversary this year, there’s no better time to explore the county’s rich history. Chesterfield County was officially chartered on May 25, 1749; this year, we will hold a milestone celebration in conjunction with Memorial Day weekend to gather and learn more about our community over the years.
The Historic Courthouse Complex is composed of several sites that tell Chesterfield’s story. Located on the Courthouse Green, the historic 1917 Courthouse sits where the first colonial courthouse was built in 1749 but demolished in 1916. It is a Virginia Historic Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1998, the 1917 Courthouse reverted to its original use as a court facility and is still used today to hear cases.
Also at the Historic Courthouse Complex are the Chesterfield Museum and 1892 Jail. The museum contains three galleries with several artifacts including the original courthouse bell. The jail housed prisoners until 1962; its first floor features the Old Jails of Chesterfield County exhibit that describes the jails, escape attempts, trials, and punishments of long ago. The structure is also a Virginia Historic Landmark.
I hope you will join me at one of the many events that are part of our yearlong celebration marking this milestone.
