Welcome to our Hidden Gem Series where we highlight businesses throughout the county that you may or may not have heard of. Why are we doing this? Well, it’s simple. We love connecting residents and visitors to our incredible county and we thought, what better way to spread the word than to create a series for all to enjoy. Check back every other week to learn more. We’re excited to share Chesterfield’s Hidden Gems with you! Next up, Three Leg Run, a craft brewery, winery and meadery.
Nestled in the heart of Chester, Virginia, lies a truly unique treasure for lovers of craft beverages: Three Leg Run. Sitting in the heart of Chester Village, this Hidden Gem is a delightful fusion of a brewery, winery, and meadery all in one place. Whether you’re a craft beer enthusiast, a wine connoisseur, or a mead fanatic, Three Leg Run is the perfect spot to explore exceptional local flavors and discover something new.
As a small batch brewery with a passion for offering a little something for wine, beer and mead lovers, owners Melissa and Steve Clayton create a range of products that showcase the best of their craft. Named after a Jack Russell Terrier that chose to run on three legs instead of four, Three Leg Run offers a family-friendly atmosphere, uniquely named craft beer, and a cozy vibe.
Brewery:
Beer lovers will be in heaven with Three Leg Run’s selection of small-batch brews. Whether you prefer a light and crisp lager, a bold IPA, or something a little more experimental, you’ll find something to love here, like ‘Paper Boy’, a brown ale that placed 3rd in the state after just six months of opening. Even more notable is ‘Working an Angle’, an English ambler ale that placed 2nd in the world at the World Beer Cup in 2024. This craft brew also brought home a gold medal in the state of Virginia. “We have our flagships [beer], but there’s almost always something here that’s never been on tap before,” said Steve Clayton, brewer and owner. And naming the beer is a fun pastime for the couple. “The names are always unique to us and our lives,” mentioned Melissa. “We want to come up with a funny name and a new beer,” said Steve.
Winery:
If wine is more your style, you’re in for a treat. Three Leg Run boasts a carefully curated wine list that features local Virginia grapes, offering both red and white options, as well as wine slushies. Most distinguished is the Noiret, a lighter bodied red wine that won a double gold in the 2024 International East meets West Competition, scoring a 96 out of a possible 100. Or try the Cabernet Sauvignon that brought home a bronze medal in the same competition.
Meadery:
And let’s not forget the mead! For those unfamiliar, mead is a honey-based alcoholic drink that’s as old as time itself. Three Leg Run’s meads are the perfect balance of sweetness and complexity, showcasing various flavors. Be sure to try the Hibiscus Ginger that won a gold medal and best in show at the National Honey Boards Mead Competition in 2023.
What truly sets Three Leg Run apart is its inviting atmosphere. The moment you step inside, you’re greeted with the warmth of wooden beams, handcrafted by Steve himself, the inviting aroma of brewing beer, and a sense of community that makes this hidden gem feel like home. “We’re family friendly, pet friendly, you can bring your dog as long as it’s leashed,” said Steve. “You can practically find anybody in here at any time.” Whether you’re enjoying a quiet afternoon with friends or attending one of their lively events, the vibe here is always relaxed and welcoming.
So, next time you’re looking for a hidden gem to unwind and explore Chesterfield’s local craft scene, make sure Three Leg Run is at the top of your list. Whether you’re a longtime resident or just visiting, it’s a stop you won’t want to miss. Cheers to discovering something new at Three Leg Run!
